Building an FRT AR-15: BCG, Buffer and Trigger Selection

Most reliability complaints about forced reset hardware are not trigger problems. They are timing problems, and the timing is set by the bolt carrier group and the buffer. Anyone building a rifle around an [frt](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/) rather than dropping one into an existing gun will save considerable frustration by settling those two components first.
Why carrier profile matters
Forced reset designs take their energy from the carrier. A full-auto-profile carrier, usually described as M16-cut, has more mass and a longer rear shroud that provides the bearing surface the reset mechanism acts against. A semi-auto-profile carrier is lightened and cut away at precisely the point where the mechanism expects material.
An M16-cut carrier does not make a rifle a machine gun and is a lawful component wherever the trigger itself is lawful. What it provides is something consistent for the mechanism to work against. Running a semi-profile carrier is the second most common cause of erratic reset, behind buffer weight.
Buffer weight
Carbine buffers come in graduated weights: standard around 3.0 oz, H1 around 3.8 oz, H2 around 4.6 oz and H3 around 5.4 oz. The buffer’s job here is to slow the carrier enough that the reset completes cleanly before the next pull, and to keep the bolt in battery long enough for reliable lockup.
H2 is the default recommendation across almost every manufacturer in the category and is the right starting point for a 16-inch carbine-gas or mid-length rifle on standard-pressure ammunition. Move to H3 when over-gassed, shooting suppressed, or seeing the carrier outrun the trigger. Starting at H1 and hoping is not a strategy.
Gas system and barrel length
Barrel length and gas port position determine how much of the pressure curve is being harvested. A short carbine-gas rifle is generally over-gassed relative to a mid-length, which is why an identical trigger can feel crisp in one rifle and sloppy in another. An adjustable gas block is worth considering on a purpose-built rifle, since tuning carrier speed directly beats fighting it with buffer mass alone.
Then choose the trigger
With carrier and buffer settled, trigger selection becomes a preference question rather than a compatibility gamble. Three broad routes exist on the AR-15.
A full cassette is a complete drop-in fire control group; packages such as the [delta team tactical frt-15l3](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product/frt-15l3/) typically ship with anti-walk pins and an ambidextrous selector. A selector-based active reset kit keeps the existing trigger and swaps the safety — the [arc fire trigger](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product/arc-fire-trigger/) is the ambidextrous option, and the [super selektor 3 position](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product/atrius-super-selektor/) is the alternative with a published compatibility list. Budget kits in the [super safety](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product-category/frt-super-safety/) category cover D2 tool steel flat-face designs at the lowest entry price.
Anyone who wants the option of running the rifle conventionally should choose three-position. An [frt 15 3 position upgrade kit](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product-category/delta-team-tactical/) gives Safe, Semi and FRT rather than Safe and FRT, and that matters more than most first-time buyers expect.
Pins and the small parts
Anti-walk pins are not optional. Standard trigger pins migrate under sustained firing, and pin walk in a rifle with an accelerated reset is a fast route to a stoppage. Most quality kits include them; confirm before ordering.
Keep the factory trigger group. For travel into a state where these devices are prohibited, refitting a standard trigger is the fastest compliance route, and having the original parts in a labelled bag turns that into a ten-minute job.
Other platforms
None of the above transfers. AK-pattern rifles run stock factory components and need an [ak 47 super safety](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product/ak-super-safety-d2-steel-kit-for-ak-47-active-reset-trigger-for-ar47-frt/) kit built for that geometry. HK roller-delayed guns need a dedicated module such as the [mp5 super safety kit](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product/frt-rd3-ambi/). Rimfire and striker-fired pistols are different again — a [glock forced reset trigger](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product/art-trigger/) works off slide travel and shares nothing with an AR buffer system, and the [freedom finger triggers frt](https://forcedresettriggers.us.com/product-category/freedom-finger-triggers/) module is the rimfire equivalent for the Taurus TX22.
Information only — not legal advice. Forced reset triggers are lawful under federal law following the May 2025 Department of Justice settlement, but fifteen states and the District of Columbia prohibit them outright and Florida and Virginia are legally contested. Verify the law in your state before purchasing or possessing any rate-of-fire device.
